WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT WHAT WE DO

We work to create enriched digital animation that derives its power from an exquisite tension between the anchoring reality of its source video and the spirited energy of our painting and image processing techniques. Controlling and playing with this balance between rigid motion underpinnings and eclectic paint styles is where the creative spark occurs. Our expertise and passion lies in knowing how to walk this fine line.

Victrolux animation is created using a combination of digital painting (essentially a form of rotoscoping), hand drawing and image processing.  The primary tool set includes Studio Artist 3.5 and MSG Evolver by Synthetik Software. Our work is conceptualized to take full advantage of these incredibly deep applications, developed by (genius) John Dalton. Other tools include Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Motion and ProTools.  The digital tools are certainly important, but the true life of the work is informed by our background in the visual and sound arts -- film, photography, photo hand-coloring, audio collage and by a love of all art -- from cave painting to the avant garde.  Our methods are modern; but we apply them with the focus and intensity of monks.

A still frame from Skate Rays, which combines digital hand painting with keyframed auto-rotoscoping.  This is an example of a quite oblique relationship between the source imagery and the final animation.  Skate Rays was born from a small, low resolution source video of skateboarding; yet the canvas was painted large, in full color and in an uncompressed codec.
